How Can Data Unlock Shipyard Transparency and Sustainability?

In the recent webinar, Shipyard Transparency: Leveraging Data for Sustainability, industry leaders tackled the challenges and opportunities of using data to drive transparency and improve sustainability in shipyards.

Pia Meling (Grieg Green) highlighted the critical role of transparency in shipyard operations and the growing pressure from multiple stakeholders.
She introduced the YardScore initiative, a performance assessment system designed to evaluate shipyards in four dimensions: environment, social responsibility, and technical efficiency. This aims to set benchmarks and drive continuous improvement.

– Our CEO Rasmus Elsborg-Jensen emphasized the importance of lifecycle assessments (LCA) and pointed to significant data gaps, particularly regarding the end-of-life phase of vessels:
“One major question from shipowners is ‘What are the environmental impacts at end-of-life?’ We cannot answer that scientifically due to a lack of data.”
This is becoming an urgent issue as regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will require shipowners to report on emissions throughout the vessel lifecycle, including end-of-life.

Ann-Christin Stucke (ABN AMRO Bank N.V.) discussed the limitations financial institutions face in enforcing sustainable practices throughout a vessel’s lifespan:
“We can’t really enforce right now if it’s not recycled in the way that we wanted it to be.”
The Responsible Ship Recycling Standard helps, but banks lose leverage when they no longer finance the vessel, raising concerns about maintaining sustainable practices over time.

Claudia Spranger ( Lisnave Internacional S.A. ) provided a real-world example of how European shipyards are implementing sustainable practices:
“The existence of a European recycling shipyard empowers Europe; it provides an internal solution for end-of-life vessels.”
She shared how Lisnave is using renewable energy and advanced waste management systems and plans to enter the ship recycling market.

The Key Takeaways:

• Data-driven initiatives like YardScore and lifecycle assessments are vital for improving transparency and accountability in shipyards.
• Regulatory requirements like the CSRD push the industry to address data gaps, particularly around end-of-life emissions.
• Financial institutions play a crucial role, but long-term enforcement of sustainable practices remains challenging once financing ends.
• European shipyards are taking the lead, but there is a clear need for more sustainable ship recycling capacity in the region.

This discussion highlights that while progress is being made, the industry must continue to innovate and address data transparency challenges to meet upcoming sustainability demands.
