A major milestone for maritime energy efficiency with a new ISO standard!
We are proud to announce that the hard work and collaborative effort to develop two new ISO standards for maritime products and equipment have finally paid off—they have been officially published.
Energy efficiency is a crucial factor for the maritime industry, both economically and environmentally. Therefore, objectively assessing efficiency across components and systems is essential. Until now, shipowners and shipyards have struggled to determine which systems and components perform most efficiently under actual operational conditions.
The two new ISO standards—developed with strong Danish leadership—provide a framework for assessing energy efficiency at the component and system levels. This ensures transparency, traceability, and comparability, enabling optimized performance where it matters most: in actual operational environments.
Why does this matter?
These standards address a critical need:
• They help shipowners and producers make data-driven decisions when selecting equipment for new builds, retrofits, or maintenance.
• They harmonize global efficiency benchmarks, making efficiency claims objective and measurable.
• They drive economic and environmental savings through better performance assessments.
We initiated the work together with Danske Maritime (Danish Maritime) and Danish Standard, with substantial contributions from key Danish and international stakeholders, including Alfa Laval, A.P. Moller – Maersk, DFDS, DESMI , Hempel A/S, and many others.
The international interest in the standards reflects their relevance: 10 countries, including Germany, Japan, China, and the USA, contributed to their development.
The standards:
✅ DS/ISO 8933-1: Energy efficiency of individual maritime components.
✅ DS/ISO 8933-2: Calculation of functional systems’ energy efficiency.
This marks an essential step in aligning quality, climate performance, and economic value as we strive for a more efficient and sustainable maritime industry.
